Passionato is the name of an online music store specialising in classical music that launched on 11 September 2008. Over 18,000 works are available as DRM-free high quality mp3 files, and for some works in FLAC format.
Passionato was founded by James Glicker, a former president of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He hopes that the service will attract classical music fans disappointed by the quality of music downloads from other sources. "Online music stores have typically offered MP3s at 128kbps, ie very compressed files, which is fine for pop music but it's not exactly high-fidelity," he said.
At launch, the service was available in the UK only but the company plans to extend this.
