Outside Bozeman

Outside Bozeman is an American magazine geared towards outdoor recreation, conservation, and culture in and around Bozeman, Montana. It was started in 1999 by two Montana State University alumni, Mike England and Jim Harris.<ref name="Mike" /> It serves as a local’s guidebook to the outdoor lifestyle of southwest Montana.
Originally founded as a semi-annual publication, Outside Bozeman currently publishes quarterly, releasing issues in congruence with each season and its specific outdoor activities. The magazine addresses issues and trends within the active-outdoor-sports community of the northern Rocky Mountains.
Outside Bozeman regularly promotes outdoor recreation, conservation, and active living through community-oriented contests,<ref name="contests" /> the most popular of which is How Far Will You Go, <ref name="How Far" /> where readers take photographs of themselves holding the magazine in distant corners of the globe. Another favorite of local residents is Top Dog,<ref name="Top Dog" /> a contest ranking the Bozeman area's best outdoor dog.
Notable contributors include writers Rick Bass, Keith McCafferty, Greg Keeler, Jonathan Weber, Alan Kesselheim, and the late Hans Saari. Notable photographers include Denver Bryan, Gordon Wiltsie, Kris Erickson, Dale Spartas, and Jimmy Chin. Notable interviewees and profiles include climber and mountaineer Conrad Anker, nature and science author David Quammen, Miss Montana and Miss Montana USA pageant winner Brittany Wiser, musician Keller Williams, and travel author Tim Cahill.
