Organs not in Europe or the USA with 80 or more stops or 5 or 6 manuals
|
These are provisional lists of all the pipe organs anywhere in the world, excluding Europe and the USA, either containing 80 or more speaking stops, or 5 or 6 manuals. Lists of large organs in Europe or the USA will be found here. In order to provide a historical record, these lists include organs which no longer exist, as well as current instruments. These lists are incomplete. Definitions and notes One organ or separate organs To decide whether an installation consists of one organ or separate instruments one simple criterion is used in this list - how many stops are controlled by one console. Several different situations arise - 1 - an organ has physically separate sections such as an Echo organ or Choir organ but such a section has no console of its own. Such organs clearly count as a single instrument. 2 - a choir organ, or another organ, physically separate from the main organ, and with its own console, may or may not be also controllable from the main console. 3 - some buildings have two large independent organs each with a separate console but no console with overall control. An example in Tokyo Metropolitan Arts Space. Stops In this list, the stop count is the total number of speaking stops, including transmissions and extensions, but excluding tremulants, percussions and couplers. Digital or electronic stops may be present on large organs, but are disregarded for all purposes in this list. Extension organs Many apparently large organs in the English-speaking world are built on the extension system, with no or very few independent registers. They are not considered in this list. Builders Generally, only the last rebuild and year are given. This does not imply that the builder mentioned has done a significant part of the whole work, but only to identify the version of the organ. No longer existing or rebuilt organs The majority of rebuilt organs in this list have attained their maximum size in their most recent rebuilt. In such cases, the previous rebuilds do not appear in this list. Some organs, for instance Toronto Royal York Hotel, may have been moved to or from another location. This is noted in the list. Numbering of entries The entries in this list are not numbered as the list contains organs which no longer exist; moreover, it is not guaranteed to be complete, and the contents will change as organs are built or rebuilt.
