</noinclude>"Orange Crows" is an Original English-language manga by James Perry II and illustrated by Ryo Kawakami, first published in early 2009. It follows the story of Cierra Pensblood, a young witch who was exiled for attempting to create her own magic, following her late mother's research. Cierra returns to the Orange District after five years of exile in the Wilderness, and attempts to re-adapt to life in the changed city, and reconnect with her once-best friend Natalie. She must also explain her left eye's strange power to absorb magical attacks, a power that was exclusive to fairies. Manga The first volume of Orange Crows was released on February 10, 2009. Though there are no immediate plans for a sequel, the author is looking for support and encouragement for the creation of a second volume. History and World The world in which the story takes place is a fantasy world where there are no humans, only witches and warlocks. Witches have strong magical abilities and are able to ride brooms, while warlocks have more physical strength, using close combat fighting. Witches had magnificent wings bestowed by the gods, with which they could fly, until they started battling over territory. The gods then took away the power of flight by reducing the wings, and created demonic Fairies that hunted the witches for their magical energy. The witches and warlocks united against the Fairies and created eight districts with barriers against their enemies. Now, safe from Fairies, the land returned to peace. Outside the towns was the "Wilderness", inhabited by the Fairies and the Forsaken. The Forsaken are witches and warlocks exiled by the towns because they broke the law. They have a chance of being Restored, though Restored witches and warlocks are considered beneath everyone else, and treated very harshly. So, many Forsaken choose to remain Forsaken, banding together to overthrow the current society. Characters * Cierra Pensblood Cierra is a young witch who has spent the last five years in exile for trying to create new magic. When her neglecting mother died, she decided to follow in her footsteps to finish the spell that her mother had been working on. There was an explosion when she attempted to complete it, and she was exiled. She is very intelligent and school was boring to her. She has a lot of spunk, and often gets carried away, regretting it later. Her left eye has the power to absorb spells cast by other witches, a power that only the witch-eating fairies possess. *Natalie Batsgrave, "Natty" Natalie is the daughter of the mayor of the town, and was Cierra's best friend. She was quiet and had very low self esteem. She has an rare eye condition that makes her have to squint to see anything. She was involved in the explosion that Cierra's experiment had created, and it was unknown to Cierra whether Natalie had lived or died. During Cierra's five years of exile, she became the head of the SWS (Special Witches and Warlocks Squad) unit the Orange Crows. She also became much more harsh, cruel and business-like. She lost one wing, *Jack Jack is a warlock who is second in command of the Orange Crows, under Natalie. He is a spunky, competitive and egotistic chain-smoker who can't resist challenging Sparticus to a game of rock-paper-scissors. His brother was killed in an expedition out of the district by a "One-Eyed Demon", and he will do anything to get revenge. *Sparticus Sparticus is a warlock with incredibly bad luck; he always loses to Jack in their rock-paper-scissors competitions and is portrayed as quite a clumsy person. Even so, he is an incredibly skilled fighter in battle. *Bianka Bianka is a witch who is described as an incredible brat. Though at sometimes she acts kind and innocent, she will often turn around and ruthlessly make fun of people if given the chance. She has been given the duty of housing Cierra during her surveillance. *Jessica Pensblood Cierra's little sister, who only helps out if there is something in it for her. Not much is known about her. *Mayor Batsgrave The mayor of the Orange District, and Natalie's father. Not much is known about him, though he seems very protective of his daughter, and somewhat ruthless. *Grim Cierra's talking hat/familiar that she somehow obtained during her exile. It tends to be insulting and cheeky, and prefers to slack off. *Siegfried Natalie's talking top hat/familiar, who's face is upside down. It is more procedural and tends to follow rules a bit more. *York Bianka's talking hat/familiar, always seen with a cigar in his mouth. *Cierra's Mentor A warlock described as perverted, he taught Cierra to fight close-range. Not much is known about his true identity or what happened to him, though it is hinted that he is Jack's brother. *The Free Minds Group A group of Forsaken witches and warlocks determined to bring down the current society that they see as unfair.
