Operanto

Operanto, a word coined by Vincent Oblyschuk, May 2010 (Tetbury) to describe a performance of The Pirates of Penzance (Gilbert and Sullivan) by the Dolphin Dramatic Society. Based upon the performance being a cross between Panto and Operatta. The performamce was deemed to have been a great performance by actors that sung as opposed to a great perfomance by singers that acted.
Whereas Operattas are often considered less "serious" than Opera, Operanto is less serious than Operatta. Topical satire is a feature common to many operettas and Operantos, although of course this is also true of some "serious" operas as well. Whereas a little bit of Panto would only be seen in an Operanto
The first known peformance of an Operanto was the Prirates of Penzance the 7th May 2010 at the Dolphins Hall, Tetbury. The director was Alex Ball currently studying at the Old Vic Theatre School, Bristol
