Open source optics refers to optics / opto-electronics / fiber optic designs that is designed in the same fashion as free and open source software (FOSS). Open source optics is part of the open source culture that takes the open source ideas to fields other than software. The term has primarily been used to reflect the free release of information about the optical design, such as construction or integration of the active and passive optical components in order to make a complete optical system. The designs sometimes include hardware and software which would typically be a open source hardware and open source software resspectively. Licenses Rather than creating a new license, some open optics projects simply use existing, open source software licenses. Other open source optics projects * Open source fiber optics communication testbench - It is an open source optics project aimed at developing a complete testbench to understand the principles of fiber optic communication. The design includes almost all passive and active optical components, analog front-end amplifiers, digitally controlled lasers etc., that are required to perform Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) link experiments including Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifer (EDFA) and Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (OADM)
