Old School Death Metal

Origin
With Thrash Metal becoming heavier and faster with bands like Slayer, Sodom, Kreator and Onslaught; a new sub-genre was just waiting to be born. Death metal drew influence from Thrash Metal albums such as Show No Mercy, Endless Pain, Power from Hell and Dark Angel's Darkness Descends.
Possessed is considered to be the first death metal band, with their first full-length album Seven Churches in 1985. Death metal started to grow, first in San Francisco, and then further in Florida, with bands like Obituary, Morbid Angel and Deicide. Up to about 1991, when the sub-genre broke up into other smaller sub-genres; such as technical, brutal, Gothenburg and progressive death metal; is considered the Old School Death Metal era. Old School Death Metal isn't known as a sub-genre of death metal, but as a period in which bands had not fully evolved from thrash metal.
