Occidental Hotels & Resorts is a hospitality company headquartered in Madrid, Spain and founded in 1982. At the time, Occidental Hotels managed properties in Spain, Portugal, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. In 2012, the hotel chain had over 80 hotels in 15 countries. Its current portfolio includes the Royal Hideaway, Grand Allegro and Occidental Hotels brands. History Occidental Hotels & Resorts began its operation in 1982. With a capital of one million Spanish pesetas a small group of directors began managing hotels in Spain, Portugal, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. From 1984 to 1995, the Company expanded with the addition of new hotels in Spain and international locations such as the Caribbean, Europe and North Africa. From 1996 to 1998 new shareholders were incorporated. Following a period of consolidation, Occidental launched new projects and an initial public offering. In 1999 it purchased the Allegro Resorts chain . This merger was finalized on September 7th, 2000, providing an expansion into Mexico and other parts of the Caribbean, as Allegro Resorts Corporation properties became part of its portfolio. Two of the largest banks in Spain are among its most participatory partners, including the Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria Bank (BBVA) . Approximately one third of the company is owned by its senior management.
