ObamaBot

The ObamaBot was a life sized campaign tool designed to generate attention from passersby for the democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. The remote controlled humanoid robot was first displayed at the Michelle Obama rally in downtown Gainesville on October 23, 2008. The robot was then displayed on the University of Florida campus in Turlington Plaza and the Reitz Union Colonnade each day leading up to the election. The robot had capabilities of waving its arms which held signs reading "Obama" and "Vote Early!, Vote Obama -- Powered by Hope", playing prerecorded Obama speeches through speakers and blinking its LED eyes in random patterns. Soon after its debut on campus, the ObamaBot became a widely known campus celebrity. Thousands of people stopped to take pictures or pose with the robot.

Description
The creators, Bryan Hood, Camilo Buscaron, and Andres Vargas, crafted the robot out of spare parts from other robot projects and from construction material from local home improvement stores. The total spent on the robot was roughly $250, but well over $1000 in parts went into the making of the device. The idea, originally conceived by Hood, came about 67 days before the election. After a couple weeks of brainstorming and distraction by schoolwork, construction began. In all, the construction took about a weeks work spread out over about a month.
