The annual North Country Fair Samba Parade happens every Fall in Arcata, California. After Carnaval San Francisco's parade, the North Country Fair Samba Parade is the longest running annual samba parade on the West Coast. Like Arcata's annual Kinetic sculpture race, the parade is a popular tradition in the community. The Samba parade circles the Arcata Plaza around noon on the Saturday of the North Country Fair. The parade began in 1986. For the first two years the parade consisted of percussionists from Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity Counties. In 1988 dancers joined and the group took the name Samba do Norte. 1988 was also the first year that the group wore coordinated costumes. In the mid-90s the group's name was changed to Samba da Alegria and a theme was adapted for each year.
