Nocton Dairies

Nocton Dairies is a company formed by Devon farmer and cheese-maker Peter Willes and Lancashire milk producer David Barnes. They plan to construct an industrial dairy in Lincolnshire. The plans were submitted to North Kesteven District Council for consideration on 17 December 2009. After public consultation the application was withdrawn on 15 April 2010. The dairy would have been the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom. 8,100 cows would have been housed.
Campaigning efforts thus far
A considerable effort went into stopping the construction of this industrial dairy complex. Members of Parliament have expressed their concerns by tabling an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons on 8 March 2010. Some 172 MPs are signatories to this, making it one of the most popular EDMs of the last session. Local residents were dismayed by the plans. A 10 Downing Street petition signed by 1,234 people has called for a public inquiry into the development. A Facebook group calling for a halt to construction attracted approximately 5000 members. Compassion in World Farming, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and 38 Degrees are all waging active campaigns on this issue. WSPA recently launched a dedicated election microsite where a number of Prospective Parliamentary Candidates voiced their concern prior to the election.
