Nightguard

Nightguards
History
Nightguards were originally designed to prevent grinding and clenching by dentists. Forms exist for partial and full occlusion.
The earliest known patent for something resembling a nightguard occurred in 1987 when Dentsply Research & Development Corp. created a new impression material for application to mammalian tissue. However, it is apparent that the nightguard was around generically long before a patent was filed for one. Several patents mention devices for cleaning a “Nightguard”.

Description
Nightguards are dental protectors to prevent nighttime teeth grinding. It is defined by smilecare.com as a mouth guard which is worn at nighttime. It can also be defined as a removable acrylic appliance to minimize the effects of grinding the teeth (bruxism) or joint problems (TMJ). It is also known as an occlusal guard or occlusal plastic device covering the upper or lower teeth to prevent tooth grinding during sleep.
