Nick Groff (born April 19, 1980) is a paranormal investigator, producer, and editor for the Travel Channel series Ghost Adventures. Sometimes referred to by its acronym GA, the show began its third season on Friday, October 30, 2009 on the Travel Channel, starting with the 7-hour live event at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia.
Early interest in the paranormal
Groff's passion to investigate the paranormal has remained with him ever since childhood. He has experienced phenomena that he could not explain, which left imprints on his curiosity. As he grew older, he continued to study the paranormal and was compelled to seek the truth behind his unexplained encounters.
Beginnings with Ghost Adventures
After befriending Zak Bagans in Las Vegas, Nevada, the two partnered based on mutual interests and, along with cameraman and equipment technician Aaron Goodwin, produced the independent documentary film Ghost Adventures (later renamed to Ghost Adventures: The Beginning). It had received several awards, including the 2006 Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. The documentary aired in 2007 and 2008 on the Sci Fi Channel (presently known as Syfy), and eventually resulted in the creation of the Travel Channel series, which currently airs every Friday night.
Investigations and notable experiences
The series features various reportedly haunted locations around the world, from the American Old West to the Scottish hills. The episodes combine historical narrations, various interviews, and raw footage of the location being investigated. Peppered throughout are moments of spontaneous humor. Some of Groff's more memorable experiences during investigations include being apparently possessed by a hostile entity at the Moon River Brewing Company in Savannah, Georgia, and being locked for nearly an hour inside a morgue slab at the abandoned Essex County Hospital Center in New Jersey, where he experienced strange sensations and heard mysterious sounds and voices.
Personal notes
Groff is the co-founder of one of the largest networks for professional ghost hunters: the Ghost Adventures Crew, or GAC. Its membership consists of about 500 paranormal organizations worldwide. He and his wife currently reside in Las Vegas, Nevada.
