Ben Hymers

Benjamin Michael Hymers (born September 8, 1989 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England) is an English artist and TV personality. In 2001, he starred in the Channel 4 documentary film series The 1940s House, along with his grandparents, Michael and Lyn Hymers, his mother Kirstie Hymers, and his younger brother Thomas Hymers.

Early life

Hymers grew up in Otley, West Yorkshire with his mother and younger brother, where he still lives today. Football was, and still is, a very important aspect of his life. He played competitively at an amateur level for local team Weston Lane between 2001 and 2007. Though he does not favour one position over another on the pitch, he typically plays in midfield and striking positions, and is well-known locally for his high scoring record.
He attended All Saints Primary School in Otley, between 1997 and 2001. He went on to study at Prince Henry's Grammar School, also in Otley, between 2001 and 2008. When he left Prince Henry's, he had an impressive collection of A Levels in Art, History and English Literature.
Hymers left Otley to study Art History at Edinburgh University in September 2008.

The 1940s House

Hymers starred in the 1940s House, a documentary film series from Channel 4, in 2001. It was his TV debut and was generally well received by the media. The series, which consisted of 5 episodes, involved Hymers and his immediate family giving up their normal, everyday lives to go and live in a 1940s environment. They were seemingly transported back into Second World War Britain, where they conducted very different lives. One of the aims of the series was to show some of the luxuries we afford in modern 21st century Britain, which people living during the war could not enjoy.

BAFTA nomination

The series was a huge success; so much so that it was nominated for a BAFTA in 2002 for the Huw Wheldon Award for Specialist Factual. Though the show did not win the award, being nominated was a huge honour and quite impressive for the then 10-year-old Hymers to have been part of.
