NewsIndexer was developed by Access Innovations, Inc. to provide a controlled vocabulary to categorize articles in the news industry. NewsIndexer is unique in that it draws on a taxonomy of news topics and provides ancillary editorial services for constant updating and customization for its clients. The system allows automatic news filtering or assists human indexers in applying subject terms to individual news articles. Terms stored in NewsIndexer are mapped for compliance with the NITF (News Industry Text Format) standards of the IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council).
By using a controlled vocabulary to automatically scan large bodies of text NewsIndexer is facilitating the switch to the large body of documents available in the emerging web 2.0 environment. Automatic indexing systems will be required in the coming years to effectively sort through the surplus of information now available.
