New media factory

New Media Factory Limited (NMF) was a web design company based in Cambridge, UK between 1994 and 1997. One of the first commercial web design agencies operating in the UK.
Founders
NMF was created by Simon Appleton and Simon Heath in 1994 and operated from offices in Station Road, Cambridge. Many of the staff had previously worked at Sema Group plc in Cambridge.
Expansion and success
Following rapid expansion NMF moved to offices to Union Road, Cambridge and subsequently opened a sales office in the US.
At its height NMF employed over 20 full-time staff and consultants with a client list consisting of a mixture of blue-chip companies and NGOs including BT, BP, Channel 5 Television, The Yellow Pages, ESRC, Nationwide and Honda Motor Europe.
Culture
A key cultural aspect of NMF was an interest in Eastern and Western philosophy. The NMF logotype was based upon trigrams from Taoist philosophy where binary lines represent either yin or yang. Members of staff 'generated' their own hexagrams through coin-tossing. These marks were repeated on individuals' business cards.
Liquidation
The company went into voluntary liquidation in 1997, many NMF staff continue to work in the web industry with several digital businesses growing out of the ashes of New Media Factory.
