Life and education
Born in Miami, Florida, Neal Turner received his M.A. in Political Science at the University of South Florida in 1995. After graduating, he moved to Paris to study painting, where he became friends with and was influenced by several established painters, including Joseph Choï. He was enormously impressed by the work of French painters from the Figuration Libre movement, as well as the work of Cy Twombly, Georg Baselitz and Frank Auerbach. In 2002, he had his first solo show at Max Galerie d'Art, in Nice, France.
Art
A self-taught painter, Turner is known for his neo-expressionist portraits and depictions of Paris, both in oil and ink. His work sometimes involves the use of oil paintings by other artists or the pages of out-of-print books, which he repaints or paints over, leaving some or most of the original work or text visible. He has had numerous gallery shows in France and the United States.
Personal life
Turner lives in Nice, France, with his wife and two sons. He is fluent in French.
