Naushabah Khan

Naushabah Parveen Khan (born 20 February 1986) is a British Labour Party politician. Khan was elected as a Councillor for the first time in 2015 representing Gillingham South Ward, in Medway, Kent. She was also Labour’s parliamentary candidate in the 2014 Rochester and Strood by-election
Early life and education
Khan was born in Medway, Kent, England. She was educated at Fort Pitt Grammar School for Girls completing her A-Levels at in Rochester, Kent, before going on to the University of Birmingham where she read History. Khan later went on to study Law at BPP Law School in London.
While at University she was an active member of Labour Students and heavily involved in the National Union of Students. Khan was elected as the first Women’s Officer for the University of Birmingham Guild of Students in 2006. As Women’s Officer, Khan a number of issues impacting female students on campus, including women’s safety. Khan went on to be elected Vice President (Housing) in 2007 for the Guild of Student’s Executive Committee which delivered the largest ever governance reform in the 100 year history of the Guild.
Career
After leaving University, Khan began her career at KPMG later going on to work in the UK Parliament. She currently works as a Director at Four Communications and is a trustee of the Fawcett Society.
Khan is a Labour and Cooperative Councillor for Gillingham South Ward in Medway, Kent. She was first elected in 2015 and re-elected with an increased majority in May 2019.
As a Medway Councillor she has led campaigns on and raised awareness of a number of issues, including tackling homelessness, women's issues and race relations. In November 2021, Khan called on the government to end Section 21 no-fault eviction notices, in order to protect renters. Khan also led a local campaign to open winter shelters for rough sleepers, following reports that four homeless people had tragically died on Medway streets.
Khan regularly appears on behalf of the Labour Party on regional media, including BBC Politics South East and KMTV.
Naushabah also serves on the Labour South East Regional Executive Committee, and is a member of the Fabian Society, Co-operative Party and GMB Union.
Rochester and Strood By-election
In 2014, Naushabah Khan was Labour’s candidate in the contentious Rochester and Strood Parliamentary By-election following the defection of then Conservative MP, Mark Reckless to UKIP. Kelly Tolhurst stood as the Conservative Party candidate. Khan polled third place in the by-election with UKIP taking the seat.
Despite the loss, she was commended for her strong performance in televised debates and her ability to tackle controversial issues, such as immigration and race relations. The Spectators Rod Liddle described her as ‘the best by a million miles.’
Khan also contested the Rochester and Strood seat in the 2015 General Election.
Khan is currently a regional representative for the LGA, Labour Group.
