National School Meals Week

About the organisers
National School Meal Week (NSMW) is run and organised by the Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA). LACA is the professional body representing over 1000 catering managers and suppliers who provide catering services to all sectors of Local Authorities in England, Wales and Scotland. Local authority caterers are responsible for providing more than 2.5 million school meals a day, civic catering such as town halls and leisure centres, social services catering such as residential homes for the elderly, day centres and meals on wheels.
Aims of the week
The week has taken place since 1993 and has the following aims:
<ul>
<li>To educate children about healthy eating by making it fun and enjoyable for Primary Pupils to have a school meal.</li>
<li>To engage with teenagers so they understand how having a healthy lifestyle is relevant to them.</li>
<li>To make parents aware that all school meals now have to meet strict nutritional standards as set out by the Government.</li>
</ul>
The week
The week is taking place from 9 to 13 November 2009 and has the support of the School Food Trust (SFT). The School Food Trust was established by the Department for Education and Skills in September 2005. Its remit is to transform school food and food skills, promote the education and health of children and young people and improve the quality of food in schools.
