N. Sama Iyengar (1891-1978) was a jurist in old Mysore state in India. He was born in the village of Sargur in Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka, India in 1891. His early life was an unusually difficult one. He lost his father at the age of three when he was killed by a bear in the thick forests surrounding Sargur. He was brought up as an only child by his handicapped mother who was deaf-mute. Despite these circumstances Sama Iyengar went on to study in Maharaja's college in Mysore and then to law college in Bombay. He returned to legal service in Mysore state. After appointments in various towns in Karnataka including Kolar, Chikmagalur, Tumkur, etc, he was appointed as Registrar of the Mysore High court in Bangalore by Darcy Reilly, the last serving British Chief Justice. Sama Iyengar retired as District and Sessions judge. He was an active member of the Theosophical Society including hearing Annie Besant speak and attending their annual conventions in Adyar, Madras. Sama Iyengar lived most of his later life in Mysore with neighbors that included the philosopher M. Hiriyanna and the family of R. K. Narayan.
