Mysterium is an annual convention for fans of the Myst franchise of computer games, which has been held each year since 2000. The name is derived from the .
Name
"Way back before the first Mysterium, but during the planning process, there was a meeting at Cyan, Inc. in which a Myst fan gathering was being planned in Spokane. Rand Miller happened to be walking past / through the room where the meeting was and commented, "Why not call it Mysterium?" or something close to that. Everyone liked the name, so we adopted it. Origins
The original 2000 convention grew out of the plans of a small group of fans who wanted to meet face to face. Word spread, and eventually approximately 200 people attended the meeting in Spokane, Washington, which was held at the headquarters of Cyan Worlds, developers of the game. Subsequent conventions have been more formally planned, but although donations towards expenses are welcomed, the event remained free with no registration or entry fees until 2007. Currently, Mysterium will be charging a small registration fee to help offset costs to run the event. Donations and Registration fees will be used for non-profit items, such as the use of a hotel/motel conference room, audio/visual equipment, and acquisition of souvenirs for the event. Cyan has specified that no committee may profit from the use of the Myst franchise, so all donations and fees are for event use only.
Conventions
There have been eight Mysterium conventions.
*2000 - The first Mysterium was held in Mead, WA at Cyan Worlds' headquarters.
*2001 - The second Mysterium took place in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
*2002 - The third Mysterium took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
*2003 - The fourth Mysterium was in Spokane, WA due to a personal invitation from Rand Miller.
*2004 - The fifth Mysterium took place in Toronto, Ontario on July 23-25.
*2005 - The sixth Mysterium took place in Chicago, Illinois on July 22-24.
*2006 - The seventh Mysterium also took place at Spokane, Washington.
*2007 - The eighth Mysterium took place in Los Angeles, California.
*2008 - The ninth Mysterium took place in Boston, Massachusetts on July 25-27.
*2009 - The tenth Mysterium is planned to take place in Spokane. Details are available at the Official Website
