Mysore Elephants Rampage Incident

On june 8,2011 the incident of elephant rage happened in the South Indian city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka when two wild elephants allegedly came from the T Narasipura forest range 35 kilometers from the Mysore city created havoc in the city killing one person and a cow and causing damages to the roadside parked vehicles and property.The elephants supposedly came through the night to the city were four in number and two of them parted their ways from the other two subsequently left to the nearby forest.The other two,an 8 year old calf and the other adult female elephant entered the city which were first noticed in the morning around 5.30 AM on the streets near Bamboo Bazaar area.The locals then informed the officials and media.
The little elephant then attacked and killed the 55 year old identified as Renuka swamy,a security gaurd at an ATM.The elephant also killed a cow nearby and damaged parked vehiclesand attacked another cow.The elephants entered the highway circle and moved on to Maharani's College of Arts, Commerce and Management and entered premises of JSS women's college.The elephants were tranquilised by the forest department officials within evening and crowd control was daunting the operation throughout.Schools and colleges in Mysore were closed for the day as precautionary measure and life in the city came to standstill.The elephants were then controlled with the assistance of Dasara elephants and were released into wild at Polibetta in Kodagu.The incident reflects the growing tension of Human-wildlife conflict and destruction of wild habitat,especially of the giant elephants.
