My Jewel

My Jewel is a chance seedling apple that originated in Watsonville, California in the 1940s. It was not a planned cross, rather, most likely was a seedling that was intended as a rootstock, the parentage is unknown, but has been suggested as Newtown pippin X Winter banana or Golden delicious X Winter banana. For years, it was proudly displayed at the Santa Cruz county fair, but it never really took off as a commercial apple. It is still grown on about 6 acres in Santa Cruz county, and shows up at the local farmers markets.
My Jewell is a yellow colored apple that will develop a red blush from sun exposure. The apple is oblong in shape, irregularly shaped, somewhat reminiscent of a newtown pippin, and will get greasy and sticky in storage. It ripens in mid to late September in Santa Cruz county. The flesh is crisp and firm, very crunchy, and has a very sweet and pronounced tropical banana flavor. My jewell is very aromatic and is very fragrant.
My jewell is an outstanding storage apple, keeping with excellent quality in conventional storage, retaining it's moisture and flavor better than golden delicious. At 33F/1C, it will keep until March or April without shriveling. After that, the flavor begins to decline, but the texture remains firm.
The tree is very vigorous and precocious, upright growing, bearing a heavy crop annually. It requires thinning to achieve large size fruit.
