Mutant Mouse Research and Resource Centers

The Mutant Mouse Research & Resource Centers (MMRRC) is a National Institutes of Health supported national consortium to provide access to strains of mutant mice and ES cells. It currently has over 30,000 strains available.
It is a national network of breeding and distribution facilities plus an information coordinating center.
Operations
Strains of mice are usually maintained in a cryopreserved state, but for the strains most in demand, a live colony be established, from which the mice are supplied from a production colony, from a colony recovered from cryopreservation, or via micro-injection of a cell line into host blastocysts.

History
The Center originated from a March 1998 meeting of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As a result of its recommendations, NIH's National Center for Research Resources established the Mutant Mouse Research & Research Centers. Operation began in 1999 with funding from five grants. In May 2001, the Centers launched a public website and began accepting applications for submissions of strains to the repository. In October 2002, its first strains became available to investigators worldwide.
In 2002, the Center added adding mouse ES cell lines, starting with the gene trap clones from by the NIH/NHLBI-sponsored BayGenomics PGA program, with further collections subsequently added since. Over 15,000 ES cell lines are available. The Center distributes both the ES cell lines themselves and mice derived from the cell lines.
In 2005, the Center became one of the initial members of the Federation of International Mouse Resources (FIMRe).
Organization
The Center is composed of an Informatics, Coordination and Service Center (ICSC) and four regional distribution facilities. They are:
*The Jackson Laboratory https://www.jax.org/mmrrc/
*University of California, Davis https://www.mmrrc.ucdavis.edu
*University of Missouri https://www.mmrrc.missouri.edu
*University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill https://www.med.unc.edu/mmrrc
The MMRRC's Coordinating Committee consists of the five grantee PIs. A steering committee, consisting of additional external researchers meets biannually.
