North American music camps divide into two categories: camps for adults, and camps for children and teens. In a typical adult music camp, the participants spend from several days to a week or more at a special location -- often a residential camp with a lodge, cabins and other features -- where they can concentrate on enhancing their ability to play or sing, socializing with like-minded people, and trying out their skills in performing. The staff is drawn from a range of professional musicians who teach one to three classes each day. Camps often have a particular musical emphasis, including blues, swing, folk, bluegrass, Irish, Scottish, Balkan, old-time music, Hawaiian music, etc. Each camp has a unique set of amenities (a dance teacher, for example, or a lake for swimming). For participants, the benefits include being away from the distractions of work and family; most camp attendees rate the chance to connect musically with others as extremely important.
