Murder of Zhongjun Cao

Dr Zhongjun Cao was a 41 year old university researcher and married father of one who was savagely attacked and killed by a gang of seven youths while walking home from Victoria University in Footscray, Melbourne, in January 2008. He was admitted in a critical condition to the Intensive Care unit of Royal Melbourne Hospital. Due to the serious nature of his head injuries, he did not regain consciousness and subsequently died.
Trial and sentencing
Speaking about the ringleader John Caratozzolo, the Supreme Court Justice David Harper said that Caratozzolo said to his mates that they go "curry bashing". This meant meaning robbing Indians. Caratozzolo pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 15 years in jail. Justice Harper described it as several hours of mad, senseless criminality". Caratozzolo's accomplice pleaded guilty to one count of was sentenced for manslaughter and robbery. He was sent to a Youth Justice Centre for three years. Taking into account the time he had already been in custody, this meant he would only possibly have to serve another two years.
