Dr Zhongjun Cao

Dr Zhongjun Cao was a 41 year old university researcher who was savagely attacked and killed by a gang of seven youths while walking home from Victoria University in Footscray, Melbourne, in January 2008. He was admitted in a critical condition to the Intensive Care unit of Royal Melbourne Hospital. Due to the serious nature of his head injuries, he did not regain conciousness and subsequently died.
The attack
21 year old John Caratozzolo said to his friends that Indians had better phones and he wanted to get a phone from an Indian. It seems that even though he was Chinese the attackers thought Zhongjun Cao was an Indian. Caratozzolo six others attacked him and the force that Caratozzolo kicked the victim in the head with was enough to damage his own foot.
Trial and sentencing
Speaking about the ringleader John Caratozzolo, the Supreme Court Justice David Harper said that Caratozzolo said to his mates that they go "curry bashing". This meant meaning robbing Indians.
Caratozzolo pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 15 years in jail. Justice Harper discribed it as several hours of mad, senseless criminality". Caratozzolo's accomplice pleaded guilty to one count of was sentenced for manslaughter and robbery. He was sent to a Youth Justice Centre for three years. Taking into account the time he had already been in custody this meant he would only possibly have to serve another two years.
