MUGGES

MUGGES is a collaborative research project which contributes to the strategic objectives of the TRANSPORT Theme. It is partially funded by the European Commission, within the European Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), call FP7-GALILEO-2007-GSA-1 targeting research on GNSS and particularly the GALILEO system.
About MUGGES
Humans are social by nature, and they are more and more willing to share their knowledge, experiences, and beliefs with others, even with anonymous readers. Content generation and consumption through mobile terminals has gained popularity during the last years, encouraged both by new more advanced interactive handsets and the availability of a plethora of entertainment and professional services.
Social networking has also become a fundamental factor in the growth of business on the Internet, with an increasing number of contributing users sharing their time and interacting with other people. The importance of this new wave of services is clearly evidenced by the interest of large traditional companies in acquiring small emergent social websites, such as Facebook or MySpace.
The MUGGES project proposes the usage of GNSS technology as a driver of the LBS Mobile User-Generated social service paradigm, which represents a very clear current trend of business innovation. The mobile terminal will evolve to become also a server, where users not only consume or generate contents, but provide those contents directly from the mobile device (‘’prosumer’’ model) with a strong awareness of their context, both geographical and social.
When put into exploitation directly by using the mobile device, a mobile user will provide constantly updated information, relevant to other users’ instantaneous interests and current context, in particular with location tagging. The project will develop the basic components and market-ready MUGGES applications or ‘’Mugglets’’ to permit the provision, remote discovery and access of information from a mobile device to a mobile device, by means of the “location” attribute of context as key service and content characterization. MUGGES applications or ‘’Mugglets’’ are small applications hosted in the mobile terminal that leverage the experience of the user in terms of location-aware social interaction.
A full evaluation of the components and business models brought forward by MUGGES, i.e. social mobile location-aware user-generated services, will be carried out through a trial. This trial will remain open after the project ends, providing a long-term behavioural assessment on the adoption of the GNSS-based technology for the proposed mobile exploitation scenarios, where location clearly adds value. The subsequent analysis of the data will provide valuable information for the widespread deployment of this innovative type of mobile GNSS-based solutions in Europe in further steps.
Goal of MUGGES
The final goal of the MUGGES project is to design and trial the deployment of a set of new innovative social location-aware mobile user-generated services using GNSS-based “intelligent tagging” as the key driver for widespread adoption. MUGGES will contribute to the GALILEO objectives by demonstrating that there is a great mass market potential for LBS in Europe and that the technology is mature enough to deliver real benefits to users.
