History
3 unselectable"off">2 unselectable"off">Mu Tau Rho came into existence because I always wanted to be in a sorority since I was a little girl. However, through life changes I felt like circumstances prevented me from fulfilling a lifelong dream. Until I had a new dream… a dream of creating a sorority for other women like me.  I chose to create a sorority for mothers because I am a mother.  I decided to pursue this goal because college is a challenge and having a child can make the experience more difficult. Therefore, I wanted to create an atmosphere where other moms like me would feel welcomed, encouraged, and motivated to succeed in accomplishing personal, educational, and career oriented goals. I want our sorority to be a place where women can develop lifelong friendships, bonds, and provide a loving environment for members children.  As sisters we will lend a helping hand to each other as well as mothers in the community. Through determination we will succeed.

Now that I am older and wiser I want to be a part of a sorority because I value and appreciate positive connections of women for life and I am thrilled to be apart of it.

I am creating something that potentially all mothers and future mothers can contribute to and become a part of. I want us to create bonds and succeed in our goals. I want us to have social functions and other community oriented programs. Lastly, I want us to have these activities when it is convenient for us. This sorority will mean a lot to me, therefore, I am willing to give and I hope that it will mean a lot to you and your family and I encourage you to give.

Sincerely,

Danielle Cooney
President/ Founder

Purpose
The purpose of this sorority is for Moms and Future moms to have a place where they can meet and create bonds with one another and their children. We want our sorority to be one that helps each sister better themselves by achieving educational and career oriented goals and by reaching out to other mothers in need within the community struggling to do the same. We want our children to have a huge part in our organization allowing them to grow up in a connected and positive environment; because at the end of the day we truly are sisters joining together as one big family.

Mu Tau Rho is a college sorority based in St. Louis, Missouri. It was founded in 2006 for student-mothers at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. It has filled a niche not commonly filled by sororities.
"I wanted to be in a sorority so bad," said founder Danielle Cooney, a 22-year-old sophomore math major. "Then I had my son. I didn't have a baby sitter to do all that."

Cooney, whose son Jourden is 3, soon realized that other women on the Missouri-St. Louis campus -- a commuter school where the average student is 27 -- sought those bonds of sisterhood while struggling to rear and provide for their children.
Mu Tau Rho stands for "Mothers Together in Parenting," members said. The uppercase Greek letter "rho" is identical to the English capital "P."

One of the few sororities aside from Mu Tau Rho catering to student mothers is Mu Omicron Mu (whose initials spell "MOM") at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. That chapter, formed in 2005, was developed as much out of financial necessity as an alternative for students with adult responsibilities by sorority president Tiffanie Stuckey, 25, a senior and single mother of a 6-year-old daughter.
