General Moving Tips
If you are going to move there are a lot of things you should do and always keep in mind. Here is some general moving tips which can help you to arrange your relocation. First of all you should organize a travel book and keep there all important moving information. Always there are some items which you don’t need any more, and there’s no need to move them to your new dwelling, so you should free yourself of these items by having a garage sale.
It’s better to back-up all important files from your computer and keep them with your travel book, in order not to lose them while moving.
Make a floor plan of the new house and keep it with your while packing and for moving day.
It’s convenient to create an “Open First Box ” and pack medications, toiletries, phone books, towels, pet food, light bulbs and any other necessary items you’ll need upon arrival. Pack this box so it will be easy to access.
It’s good to make a special box for children and put there their toys, books and different stuff.
Don’t forget to leave the keys to the new homeowners.
Make sure your moving date is convenient for you. It’s necessary to remember that moving companies have a peak and off-peak season. Peak season is in the summertime, the beginning and end of each month and the end of the year. So at this time the costs may be higher.
It’s better to begin to make arrangements and organize your belongings about a month before moving.
Don’t forget to fill out two change of address forms: one for the IRS and the other for the Post Office.
Reserve a rental truck or make arrangements with a moving company beforehand. In some cases it may be necessary to make arrangements with airlines, hotels or buses.
Don’t forget to obtain all your medical records. You can ask your doctor for referrals in your new area and to transfer any prescriptions. Keep all your medical documents in your travel book, they are very important.
You can transfer your memberships to clubs, churches, or civic organizations.
It may be useful to make a detailed inventory of your belongings. It’s even better to take pictures or video tape of your items. You should write down serial numbers of electronics and keep them in your travel book.
Do not buy a lot of groceries and use up what you have before moving, as there will be less stuff to pack and you food won’t spoil.
If you will move by yourself, without any help of moving companies, it’s necessary to buy moving supplies, such as boxes, tape, moving pads, hand truck, blankets. As for the boxes, you can get them for free in the supermarkets.
Two weeks before moving, begin to finalize arrangements:
You should contact your telephone, gas, cable/satellite, electric, water companies and give them a specific date to discontinue service. You should also notify lawn service, security and cleaning services about your relocation. Don’t forget to contact the same services in your new town to set up a start date.
Close your bank account and put your funds to the new bank. Don’t forget to pick up your valuables from safe-deposit box.
Register children in their new school and have their records transferred.
Keep in mind that if you move into a new state, you will need to get new car insurance.
If you are moving from an apartment, it’d better reserve an elevator.
