Monit

Monit is a tool open source monitoring local services installed on a machine Unix. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License.
Monit between the family of monitoring software, such as Munin and Nagios. The role of Munin and Nagios is to monitor, grapher, and alerting on the availability of a resource. The specificity of Monit is particular to automate various actions, such as restarting an application that does not respond more. For this, it has a simple and powerful free program to monitor and trigger the desired actions. It can also alert by email of its actions or if conditions change as the PID of a process. It can also help manage the security of a Unix system by improving the availability, triggering action conditional, and alerting administrators.
It can check the availability of a daemon and it consumes resources employed, and depending on the result choose to leave him alone, to restart or stop it.
Unlike Nagios and Munin, Monit can not monitor the status of the machine on which it is installed. Recently m / monit (non-free license) is available to fill the gap.
