Monica Plank (April 29, 1979 - February 16, 2014) was a U.S. Marine Gunnery Sergeant who was killed in a hit and run while off duty on February 16, 2014. Plank was walking with her husband in Bellefontaine, Ohio when she was hit by a car. Plank and her husband were both on leave from the Marines spending time with their five children and other family. Less than a week later, Holly Fowler was found to be responsible for Plank's death and subsequently arrested. Plank's family pressed for the maximum manslaughter sentence in court but it was ruled that the evidence could only uphold a 30-month sentence. Plank served 16 and a half years as a Sergeant Instructor at the Officer Candidate School, a mechanic in Afghanistan, and a drill instructor at Parris Island, South Carolina.<ref name="obituarymonica" /> She was a significant member of the United States Marines and her death was made more tragic as it was an off-duty accident.
