Modern Rugs Ltd is a UK-based online rug retailer. The company sells over 25,000 rugs per year to a customer base consisting of domestic and trade clients, including the interior design industry. Modern Rugs offers an extensive selection of rugs in over 20,000 different design and size combinations to customers across the UK and Europe. The company’s distribution warehouse and offices are based in a 5,000 sq. ft. facility at Aycliffe Business Park in County Durham, England. The company also owns and operates The Sisal Rug Store.
History
Modern Rugs was founded in 2004 by marketing graduate, Ben Dale. Ben set up the company in County Durham, utilising the knowledge of his parents who ran a carpet wholesale business in Bishop Auckland.
The company is backed by PHD Equity Partners and Enterprise Ventures, who supported a £3.2m management buy-in by Martin Tragen and Mike Seery in 2014. Both Mr. Tragen and Mr. Seery were appointed as directors of the business in 2014.
Awards
Modern Rugs was awarded the ‘Best Online Retailer 2015’ award by Interiors Monthly Magazine.
Charity
In honour of World Kindness Day 2014, Modern Rugs Ltd asked local charities to nominate ‘Unsung Heroes’ in the County Durham area. This gave staff and volunteers the chance to win a luxury day experience.
In 2016, Modern Rugs teamed up with GoodWeave, an organisation that helps to combat the exploitation of children in the carpet industry. The latter operates in Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Germany, USA and the UK, certifying child-labour-free-rugs and educating people about the issue. Modern Rugs is an official GoodWeave Industry Supporter and stocks GoodWeave products.
Modern Rugs Ltd is a corporate sponsor of Butterwick Hospice - a charity offering pain and symptom control, therapy and counselling via three UK hospices.
