Mid-Pacific English describes a version of the English language which is neither predominantly American nor Australian in usage. It is commonly found amongst Australians in the United States, many of whom have exhibited features of the accent of their place of work and/or residence. Features "Mid-Pacific" attempts to use no deliberate features of either the Australian or American versions of the English language, so that it can be equally understandable and acceptable on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. Australians who work or take up residence in the United States, particularly performing artists, tend to develop a Mid-Pacific accent, de-emphasising their distinctive regional or national intonation. This accent has increased in prominence in recent years, as there has been an influx of Australians to the United States, particularly actors in films and television. Examples include Rupert Murdoch, Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, Anthony LaPaglia and Jesse Spencer.
