Family
He is the son of Ben Thau, one of the "college of cardinals" executives that worked in the background for Louis B. Mayer during MGM's glory years. Ben Thau was vice president of talent at the studio from the mid-1930s until the early 1960s.
Superman film restoration projects
Michael Thau oversaw the development of the Superman DVD release in 2001, editing the special edition cut of the film. He also directed, produced and edited the three documentaries on that DVD, Taking Flight: The Development of 'Superman, Making 'Superman': Filming the Legend and The Magic Behind the Cape.
Mr. Thau has worked with Superman director Richard Donner in many capacities and on many films, starting with The Toy in 1982. In 2006, he completed work on the long-awaited Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut. Mr. Thau produced the new version and edited the new material. Despite receiving much criticism for not creating a CGI villains rule the world scene in Superman II, Mr. Thau has remained adamant about his work, stating "I hope people understand - I'm not apologizing for anything we did."
