Michael Paul Thomas

Michael Paul Thomas (born 1956) is a California attorney and leading civil litigation expert, author, and educator. For over two decades, Thomas has been voted by his peers to The Best Lawyers in America.
Thomas is one of the most published legal authors in California. His legal treatises are published by the world's largest legal publisher West (a unit of Thomson Reuters). He is the author of the "widely regarded" California Civil Courtroom Handbook and Desktop Reference; co-author of the authoritative six-volume California Civil Practice: Procedure; lead author of the five-volume treatise California Civil Practice: Torts; co-author of California Premises Liability; and creator and author of The Rutter Group's innovative FlipLaw legal guide series. In addition, Thomas has published more than 150 legal articles in various publications, including the first mandatory continuing legal education ("MCLE") self-study article to appear in the prestigious California Lawyer magazine (October 1996), and several additional MCLE and "Expert Advice" articles thereafter.
Thomas has taught civil procedure, lawyering skills, and legal research and writing at several law schools, including Chapman University School of Law, Whittier Law School, and Western State University College of Law. He has also taught numerous continuing legal education courses. Thomas has served as a judge pro tem and is a CADRA certified mediator. He is a member of the Orange County Sheriff’s Advisory Council and serves on the Advisory Board for Crime Survivors Inc., a crime victims’ rights advocacy organization. Thomas also maintains an active civil litigation practice, representing individuals, small businesses, Fortune 500 companies, and government entities. He is frequently called upon to provide expert legal commentary for newspapers, radio, and television.
Thomas received his undergraduate degree from California State University, Fullerton, in 1981, and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1984.
