Michael Josh Villanueva

Michael Josh Villanueva (born ) is a multimedia producer, technology journalist, speaker, author and host of the technology web show TechRap. He is the technology editor and director for special projects of news and action site Rappler. He was previously Head of Social Media and Digital News Gathering at GMA Network in the Philippines. Villanueva hosted the video podcast HIT which ran from 2005 to 2006. He is credited as one of the first Filipino podcasters.
Education
Villanueva graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2000 with a degree in Broadcast Communication. While in college he co-founded the academic org UP Broadcasters’ Guild.He holds a Masters Degree in Journalism from the Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo De Manila University. He was the recipient of the Konrad Adenauer Fellowship in 2005.
Career
Villanueva joined Philippine broadcast network GMA Network in 2000 as a reporter and desk assistant. He reported on technology and sports for GMA News and hosted the news segment TechTrends on News On Q. In 2011, Villanueva was appointed Senior Manager for Digital News Gathering and Social Media. He is credited for setting up the GMA News & Public Affairs social media team and for revitalizing its citizen journalism program YouScoop.
In 2012, Villanueva joined news and action site Rappler as Director for Special Projects splitting time developing company strategies, organizing events like the annual Social Good Summit and overseeing the development of Rappler’s iOS and Android apps. He is currently Technology Editor and produces and anchors the weekly tech show TechRap and travels the globe to speak on behalf of technology for social good.
