Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1980. He later received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of British Columbia in 1984. Michael is also a LEED-accredited professional. As a director of Bing Thom Architects, Michael has overseen the planning and designing phases of various projects, including Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas; Surrey Central City in Surrey, BC; the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC; and Arena Stage in Washington, DC. Surrey Central City has been described by Chris Macdonald, professor in the School of Architecture at the University of British Columbia, as providing “vivid counterpoint to the original closed, rectilinear format” of the existing shopping mall. The project, "illustrates the potential to approach suburban retrofitting not as a return to past forms but as a brave new synergistic world". The completion of the project has spurred the creation of a new master plan for additional development in the City of Surrey. Michael has served on the boards of various community organizations over the years, such as the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Vancouver Chapter of Lambda Alpha International. He also served as a juror for the Canada Council for the Arts. Currently, Michael is a member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and the Vancouver Economic Development Commission.
