Michael Birmingham

Michael Birmingham (born 1976), is an ex-professional footballer who plays in midfield and is currently assistant manager at Gosport Borough.

Player
Birmingham started his career as a first year professional at Portsmouth. After he was let go he went to Dorchester Town in the 1993-94 season under Stuart Morgan and did well. However because it was hard for Birmingham to get to Dorchester Town every week and Jack Pearce wanted to sign him, he joined Bognor Regis Town as an eighteen year old in 1994. He signed on a Monday and played Southampton FC reserves the next day and helped Bognor Regis Town beat them 2-1 and he spent the next 14 years as a regular in the side. He was in the team in 2002-03 that finished 2nd and finally won promotion back to the Isthmian League Premier Division, and a 10th place finish the following season in 2003-4 season to claim a place in the re-structured Conference South. In successive seasons he was in the Bognor Regis Town team that finished 9th in 2004-5 (their highest ever position), 12th in 2005-6 and 12th in 2006-7.

Player Manager
He was assistant manager to Jack Pearce before taking over as player manager in October 2007 when Jack Pearce stepped down as manager and Michael Birmingham took over and saved the club from relegation by finishing in 18th place. He played 567 games plus 29 appearances as substitute scoring 84 goals before hanging up his boots at Bognor Regis Town in the spring. At the end of the season in May 2008 he stepped down and moved to Gosport Borough as assistant manager to Alex Pike.
He has since started playing again for Gosport Borough.
