Mexicans in Atlanta

Atlanta has a sizeable Mexican population. More than 314,351 Mexicans live in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Mexican population in the Atlanta area is growing and started developing since the 1980s and 1990s. Mexicans are concentrated in Gwinnett County. Many Mexican men in Atlanta are construction workers. Mexicans in Atlanta are also carpenters, painters and paperhangers and construction supervisors. The construction industry of Greater Atlanta has become dependent on Mexican-American labor. The Mexican population has been growing rapidly in Atlanta since 1970. Mexicans makeup the largest foreign born Latino population in Atlanta. Mexicans made up 61 percent of metropolitan Atlanta's Hispanic population according to the 2000 census.
History
Mexicans began arriving in Georgia when Gainesville, Georgia was beginning to be considered “Poultry of Capital of the World”. The 1990s witness the largest migration of Mexican immigrants to Georgia. In Dalton, Georgia the Hispanic population, most who were Mexican, rapidly increased from 7 percent to 40 percent from 1990 to 2000. Mexican immigrants along with their American-born children became a visible part of society in North Georgia. Atlanta became a major hub for Central American and Mexican workers. Mexican immigrants brought their Catholic religion with them to Atlanta.
