Melodic metalcore, also called Swedecore, Gothencore, Melodic Deathcore and sometimes refered to as the New Wave of American Metal (also abbreviated to NWOAM), is a fusion genre that combines elements of Scandinavian/melodic death metal and early metalcore. It was pioneered by the bands Overcast and Zao, and it was, at one point, a very popular style of heavy metal. The majority of the bands that play melodic metalcore are American, but some bands from Europe, such as Caliban and Heaven Shall Burn, play music in the genre as well..
Characteristics Melodic metalcore is oftentimes more melodic than "normal" metalcore. Many swedecore bands with two guitarists utilize harmonized lead guitar parts and more melodic guitar riffs. The melodic guitar leads are often juxtaposed against heavy rhythm guitar parts, fast tempo, and brutal vocals, which consist of hardcore-style screaming with occasional melodic singing.
The lyrics are more similar to hardcore than they are to heavy metal., with bands talking about anarchy, environmentalism, and even veganism. Christianity is also a very big theme, with many bands expressing Christain beliefs in their music (As I Lay Dying, Zao).
History Origins Melodic Metalcore was originated in the United States, most notably in the Washington D.C., North Carolina, and Boston music scenes. The bands Overcast and Zao are believe to have pioneered this genre sometime in the late 1990s .Darkest Hour's "The Prophecy Fulfilled", Prayer for Cleansing's "The Rain in Endless Fall", Poison the Well's "The Opposite of December... A Season of Separation" and Unearth's "Above the Fall of Man" were also influential to the development of melodic metalcore.
Rising and Declining Popularity Around the year 2000, melodic metalcore became immensly popular due to its overlap with some more extreme post-hardcore bands. The genre's success is due to bands such as Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, and Darkest Hour, with some of those bands being considered the forerunners of the genre.
Later on, melodic metalcore would lose its popularity (somewhat) to post-hardcore. However, melodic metalcore's influence is visible in the mainstream, as many popular post-hardcore bands, such as Alexisonfire or Silverstein, often conspicuously incorporate NWOAM riffs into their sound.
