MELCAD

MELCAD is a computer program for mechanical CAD/CAM used internally by employees of Mitsubishi and developed at Horizon Research Labs in Waltham, MA during the mid 1990s. Its name is an acronym for Mitsubishi Electric CAD.

The CAD/CAM development center was situated in the Boston High Tech Corridor because of the proximity to other CAD developers, mainly Prime, ComputerVision, PMTC, and MatraDatavision. Hence, it was easier for Mitsubishi to find former employees of other CAD vendors who were already trained in CAD, thus saving on employee relocation and training.
