Margaret 'Maud' Mitchell (16 July 1891 - 26 January 1972) was an Irish author and former member of Cumann na mBan and the IRA in a number of its forms over the course of her life. Born Margaret Mulvihill to her parents, Martin & Eliza. She read theology as a young woman. Maud married Herbert 'Sean' Mitchell on 8 September 1915 at St. Mary's Church, Athlone, County Westmeath. In 1993, The Man with the Long Hair: The Spirit of Freedom in a Woman's Story, a memoir based on her manuscripts regarding her life during her involvement with the IRA, was published posthumously by her youngest daughter, Dr. Ruth Mitchell-Quill (Glenwood Publications). A copy of the book is stored in the NLI Catalogue and has been used as a reference for historical works. is named after her and is located towards the front of Glenwood, the house in which she lived.
