Master game server

A master game server is an internet service which receives information about running game servers and their rules and deliveres this information upon requests to clients, e.g. a game server browser. This applies to games such as MMOs or first-person shooters, which are played online with many other other users, as opposed to the traditional console games. Well known examples are the semi-public GameSpy master servers, which are encrypted and only available to GameSpy Arcade users or the disputed gslist tool. Another example are the various extensions available for the popular web browser FireFox, which might add toolbar or menu items displaying the current status of a games official server. |
