Mary Hamilton Scobell

Mary Hamilton Scobell (5 September 1877 - 21 February 1976) known as Polly, was a British socialite, best known for being the mother of writer Barbara Cartland and maternal grandmother of Raine McCorquodale. She was thus the step-great-grandmother of Princess Diana.
Biography
Mary was born on 5 September 1877, the third daughter of Sanford George Treweeke Scobell, JP (1839-1912), of Down House in and of Osborne House, The Park, Cheltenham, by his wife Edith (born 1849), fourth daughter of Septimus Henry Palairet (1807-1854), of the Grange in Bradford-upon-Avon, who was of Huguenot descent. His father was a Major in the and the regiment's Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in 1896; he was the son of Rev. John Scobell, rector of Southover and All Saints in Lewes, who was part of the Scobell family of Nancealverne. His younger brother was Major-General Sir John Scobell (1879-1955).
Marriage
In July 1900, Mary married Major James Bertram Falkner Cartland (24 May 1876 - 27 May 1918), son of James Cartland and Flora Cartland. They had four children:
*Stillborn Daughter (c. 1911)
*Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland (July 9, 1901 - May 21, 2000)
*Major John Ronald Cartland (January 3, 1907 - 30 May 1940)
*James Anthony "Tony" Hamilton Cartland (January 4, 1912 - May 19, 1940)
Her husband died on 27 May 1918, Killed in action in World War I.
Mary died on 21 February 1976 at the age of 98 at Littlewood House, Poolbrook, Malvern, Worcestershire, England.
