Manitoba Hemp Awareness Comittee
In 1994 the UMHAC was a started at the University of Manitoba by Martin Moravcik, Meera Sarin, Wayne Potoroka and Gil Maguet. Their mission was to educate people on the many benefits of industrial hemp and to disprove all the false information about hemp that was causing hemp to be blacklisted by the majority of the population at that time.
Manitoba Hemp Alliance
The MHL lobbied the provincial government for assistance with research and development of hemp agriculture and was able to convince Manitoba’s Agriculture Minister of hemp’s great potential. Led by Martin Moravcik, the group submitted a business plan and the Province responded by providing $25,000 and the services of an agronomist. Moravcik’s group obtained some of the first hemp test plot permits from the Canadian government, and the success of their policy activity and research led to the legalization of hemp agriculture in Canada and the first harvest in 1998.
Manitoba Harvest
Martin, Alex and Mike teamed up with 20 local farmers that became shareholders in the company they named Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods & Oils. Learning from CGP’s oversight, Manitoba Harvest focused on educating consumers about the health benefits of hemp foods, and through word-of-mouth and direct interaction with customers through consumer shows and in-store demos, grew to be the global leaders in manufacturing hemp foods.
