Mark H. Washburn is an award winning journalist. He writes television and radio commentary for The Charlotte Observer which he joined in 1999. Previously, Washburn was the Day City Editor of the Charlotte Observer. Prior to the Observer, Washburn was the State Editor of the Miami Herald. Previously, Mark Washburn worked for newspapers in West Virginia and Raleigh, NC.
Mark H. Washburn is a native of Washington, D.C. and lives in Davidson, NC. He is a 1975 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College. Mark H. Washburn is a participant in the West Virginia Wesleyan College “Alumni Share Knowledge” (ASK) program.
Mark Washburn was on the staff of the Miami Herald in 1993 when it won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. The Miami Herald was recognized for coverage that not only helped readers cope with Hurricane Andrew's devastation but also showed how lax zoning, inspection and building codes had contributed to the destruction.
In June of 2005, Observer reporter Mark Washburn and Macon, Georgia Telegraph photographer Nick Oza, both of Knight Ridder newspapers, traveled to Iraq with a North Carolina National Guard unit.
