Deon Hampton

Deon J. Hampton (born October 9, 1980), a nine-time award-winning reporter, is a news reporter at the Tulsa World newspaper in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition to his general assignments and cops reporting, he also is featured in a bi-weekly series entitled Deon TV, a web show in which Hampton interviews Tulsa area high school athletes.
He is also the past president and current vice-president of the Tulsa Association of Black Journalists.
His former reporting jobs included a one-year stint at the Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper and the Denver Weekly News.
In March 2009, Hampton was a part of a three-member team who won first place in the general news category from the Oklahoma Associated Press.
The award was for their coverage of the nations' largest E-Coli outbreak. Hampton wrote the breaking news story. At the time, one person was dead and about 20 others had been taken to a hospital after eating at a family restaurant in Locust Grove, Oklahoma.
In January, Hampton won a third place award from Oklahoma's Society of Professional Journalits. The story was for his coverage of the funeral of a 13-year-old girl who was murdered by her classmate over a boy.
In March 2008, Hampton was a part of a four-member team who were the sweepstakes winners in the Oklahoma Associated Press awards.
The award is the highest reporting award in Oklahoma. The team also won first place in general news reporting.
The team won the awards for their coverage of Tulsa's ice storm in December 2007.
Hampton, who was in his first year of reporting at the World, broke the ice storm story, which left the majority of the city without power and electricity.
Hampton also won three awards during the 2008 Oklahoma Association of Black Journalists' annual awards banquet. OABJ is an affiliate of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Hampton and a graphic designer earned first place in the competition's best grapich category for "Tulsa's top 10 most influential black leaders."
He also took second place in the feature and news categories for his articles on "In the shadow of stars" and "Body handling due review."
While in Tulsa, Hampton became a member of the KDM connection, a collective of Tulsa reporters consisting of Hampton, Keidron Dotson and Marcus Washington.
Non-official members were Latoya Silmon (KOTV 6) and Ashli Sims (KOTV 6,) Mia Fleming (Fox 23), Kim Jackson (KTUL 8), Sharryn Harvey, Philip Winfrey and Russell LaCour (Tulsa World).
Hampton is a native of Illinois and was raised in Denver, Colorado. He attended Langston University before graduating in 2004.
