Maria Shine Stewart

Maria Shine Stewart, born in 1956, is a versatile writer, having authored over 100 articles, marketing projects, and letters to the editor. She is currently a faculty member of John Carroll University, Cuyahoga Community College, Notre Dame College, and previously taught continuing education to corporate and nonprofit organizations at the Cleveland State University where she served as writer and editor in the Publications and News Bureau. She also teaches writing to many groups including senior citizens and is dedicated to all those needing her help. She has taught public relations, writing, and editing to those needing these skills, including immigrants to the United States seeking to improve their knowledge of the English language.

Maria Shine Stewart's articles have been published in newspapers including the News Herald and the Cleveland Jewish News and other publications such as Ohio Writer, Tri-Scene, The Bibliotherapist, and Crain's Cleveland Business. Beauty in Youth and Age is a collection of writings she compiled in collaboration with senior citizens and teenagers, sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, OASIS (Older Adult Service and Information Systems), and John Hay High School; it was placed in Cleveland's Bicentennial/Tricentennial time capsule to be opened in 2096. The publication allowed often ignored segments of our population--senior citizens and minority youth--to have their voices heard.

"Six Steps to a Brighter Future," which she wrote, was created at Cleveland State University and recognized by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education for encouraging underprivileged middle schoolers to think early about college--not necessarily CSU.

Maria Shine Stewart's uniqueness as a teacher includes her work with diverse age groups throughout greater Cleveland, reaching up to two hundred students a year at multiple institutions.

She is committed to fostering literacy and writing across the lifespan. Loretta Magden, one of her senior students, has published "The Treetop Bird Family" (2007), and many of her memoir students have compiled manuscripts and books for their families.

Her knowledge of several foreign languages enhances her ability to review the primary sources needed to write an article and conduct research in Holocaust studies, European literature, poets and writers. She is a prolific blogger, contributor to many blogs, and authors her own blogs.

For the News Herald, she covered speeches given by Dick Gregory, former ambassador Edward Peck, educational psychologist Jane Healy, and noted historian Taylor Branch.

She is noted as a member of the second generation of Holocaust survivors, her father having survived the Holocaust. Maria Shine Stewart's family includes all of the major religions. She is dedicated to tolerance and human rights.

She has a Master's in English from John Carroll University and remains a lifelong student.
