Maria Axente is a Romanian-born AI Ethics expert, currently based in the UK. She advises partners in industry, academia, and government on how to harness the power of artificial intelligence ethically and responsibly. Education and career Axente is originally from Transylvania, Romania. Axente is currently serving at PwC UK, setting up an AI Center of Excellence, in accordance with the firm's AI strategy and the development of an AI toolkit. She is particularly concerned with a methodology for embedding ethics in AI. She is also a member of the "The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Artificial Intelligence" (APPG AI) which was set up in January 2017 to explore the impact and implications of artificial intelligence. Media In 2019, Axente was added to the list of 30 European AI experts to follow. In 2019 and 2020 she was included in 100+ Brilliant Women in AI & Ethics list. In July 2020, she was included in Computer Weeklys Most Influential Women in UK Tech nominee long list. Maria Axente's views on AI ethics and governance, including responsible digital transformation, have been covered by the BBC, Forbes, and The Guardian. In 2020, Maria Axente contributed as an expert to UNESCO report "Artificial intelligence and gender equality: key findings of UNESCO’s Global Dialogue" (p.6).
